AI Product Disclaimer
Last updated: 13 June 2026
Pivitax is an expense and receipt tracker for UK sole traders and freelancers. As part of delivering this service, Pivitax uses artificial intelligence to process receipts, categorise expenses, and generate tax-related reports and document analysis. This AI Product Disclaimer explains how those AI features work, what their limitations are, and what you should and should not rely on them for.
By using any AI-powered feature within Pivitax, you agree to the terms set out below. This disclaimer forms part of your agreement with Pivitax and should be read alongside our Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions.
1. Nature of AI-Generated Output
1.1 Pivitax uses Anthropic Claude to power all of its automated AI features, including receipt scanning, expense categorisation, and tax report generation.
- Anthropic Claude — processes receipt photos, extracts data from uploaded documents, categorises expenses, and generates tax reports and financial summaries.
1.2 The outputs produced by these AI systems — including expense categorisations, mileage estimates, VAT calculations, tax report drafts, and document summaries — are generated automatically by machine learning models. They are not prepared, reviewed, or verified by a qualified accountant, bookkeeper, or tax adviser before being presented to you.
1.3 AI-generated outputs are probabilistic in nature. This means they are produced by a model predicting likely results based on patterns in data, not by applying a definitive rule-set or performing a legal analysis. Even where an output appears confident and specific, it may contain errors.
2. No Professional Tax, Legal, or Financial Advice
2.1 Nothing produced by Pivitax — whether by its AI features or otherwise — constitutes professional tax advice, accountancy advice, legal advice, or financial advice of any kind.
2.2 Pivitax is a software tool designed to help UK sole traders and freelancers organise and track their expenses and receipts. It is not a substitute for a qualified accountant, tax adviser, or HMRC-authorised agent.
2.3 In particular, AI-generated outputs such as tax reports, expense categorisations, and document summaries should not be submitted to HMRC, used to calculate your Self Assessment tax return, or relied upon to determine your tax liability without independent verification by a suitably qualified professional.
2.4 Tax rules applicable to UK sole traders and freelancers — including allowable expenses, capital allowances, VAT thresholds, and Making Tax Digital requirements — change over time. Pivitax does not guarantee that any AI-generated output reflects the most current HMRC guidance or legislation.
3. Accuracy and Hallucination Disclaimer
3.1 AI models, including Anthropic Claude, are known to produce outputs that are factually incorrect, incomplete, or fabricated. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as "hallucination." Pivitax cannot prevent this from occurring.
3.2 Examples of errors that may appear in AI-generated outputs within Pivitax include:
- Incorrect extraction of figures from receipt images (for example, misreading amounts, dates, or merchant names);
- Incorrect categorisation of an expense for tax purposes;
- Inaccurate VAT calculations or assumptions about VAT status;
- Summaries or reports that omit, distort, or misrepresent information contained in the original documents you uploaded.
3.3 The accuracy of AI outputs depends heavily on the quality of the inputs you provide. Poor-quality images, unclear receipts, or incomplete information will increase the likelihood of errors.
3.4 Pivitax does not represent or warrant that any AI-generated output is accurate, complete, current, or fit for any particular purpose.
4. User Responsibility to Verify
4.1 You are solely responsible for reviewing, verifying, and confirming the accuracy of every AI-generated output before relying on it for any purpose, including but not limited to:
- Filing your Self Assessment tax return with HMRC;
- Making claims for business expenses;
- Calculating your income, profit, or tax liability;
- Sharing financial information with a lender, accountant, or other third party.
4.2 You should not assume that a receipt has been correctly read, an expense has been correctly categorised, or a report is accurate simply because it has been generated by Pivitax's AI features. Always cross-check against your original source documents.
4.3 If you are uncertain about the correct tax treatment of any item, you should seek independent advice from a qualified accountant or tax adviser, or consult HMRC directly.
4.4 Pivitax accepts no liability for errors in your tax return, underpayment or overpayment of tax, HMRC penalties, or any other financial or legal consequence arising from your reliance on an AI-generated output without independent verification.
5. Training Data and Sources
5.1 The AI model used by Pivitax — Anthropic Claude — is developed and maintained by Anthropic. It is trained on large datasets that may include publicly available text, documents, and other data sources. Pivitax does not control the content of those training datasets.
5.2 The outputs generated by these models may reflect patterns, assumptions, or information from their training data that is outdated, incomplete, or not applicable to your specific circumstances as a UK sole trader or freelancer.
5.3 Pivitax does not use your personal data or the content of your uploaded receipts and documents to train AI models. Your data is processed by Anthropic Claude solely for the purpose of generating outputs within your Pivitax account, subject to Anthropic's terms of service and data processing agreements. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
6. Bias and Limitations
6.1 AI models may reflect biases present in their training data. In the context of Pivitax, this could affect how certain types of expenses, industries, or working arrangements are categorised or described.
6.2 Pivitax's AI features are designed with UK sole traders and freelancers in mind, but the underlying AI models are general-purpose systems. They may not accurately reflect nuances of UK tax law, HMRC practice, or the specific circumstances of self-employed individuals.
6.3 AI receipt recognition may perform less accurately with:
- Handwritten or non-standard receipts;
- Receipts in languages other than English;
- Low-resolution, damaged, or partially obscured images;
- Receipts from non-standard formats or retailers.
6.4 Pivitax works to improve the accuracy and reliability of its AI features over time, but cannot guarantee that all limitations will be identified or resolved.
7. Permitted and Prohibited Uses of AI-Generated Outputs
7.1 Permitted uses. You may use AI-generated outputs from Pivitax to:
- Assist you in organising and reviewing your expenses and receipts;
- Provide a starting point for preparing your accounts or tax return, subject to your own verification;
- Share with your own accountant or bookkeeper as a working document, provided you make clear that the content is AI-generated and unverified.
7.2 Prohibited uses. You must not:
- Submit an AI-generated tax report or expense summary to HMRC as a final, verified record without independent review;
- Represent AI-generated outputs as having been prepared or verified by a qualified professional;
- Use AI-generated outputs as the sole basis for any financial, legal, or tax decision;
- Rely on AI-generated outputs in any dispute with HMRC, a lender, or any other party without independent corroboration.
7.3 Pivitax reserves the right to suspend or terminate access to AI features where it reasonably believes those features are being misused.
8. Intellectual Property and Ownership of Outputs
8.1 Subject to clauses 8.2 and 8.3, AI-generated outputs produced within your Pivitax account using your own input data are made available to you for your personal business use.
8.2 The underlying AI model that generates these outputs is owned and operated by Anthropic (Claude). Your use of AI-generated outputs is also subject to Anthropic's applicable terms of service.
8.3 Pivitax does not claim ownership of the content of AI-generated outputs you produce. However, the Pivitax platform, its interface, branding, and underlying software remain the intellectual property of Pivitax and may not be copied, reverse engineered, or reproduced without permission.
8.4 Because AI-generated content is produced by an automated system rather than a human author, the copyright status of such outputs may be uncertain under UK law. Pivitax makes no warranty as to the copyright ownership of AI-generated outputs and recommends you seek legal advice if this is relevant to your circumstances.
9. Privacy of Your Inputs
9.1 When you use AI-powered features in Pivitax, the content of your receipts, documents, and related data is transmitted to third-party AI providers for processing. Specifically:
- Anthropic Claude receives receipt images, extracted text, and document content for processing, categorisation, and report generation.
9.2 Anthropic operates under a data processing agreement with Pivitax. By using these features you acknowledge that your data will be transmitted to and processed by Anthropic, and their privacy policy and data handling practices will apply.
9.3 You should avoid uploading documents containing sensitive personal data beyond what is necessary for expense tracking purposes. You should not upload documents containing third-party personal data (for example, the personal details of employees or clients) unless you have a lawful basis for doing so under UK GDPR.
9.4 For full details of how Pivitax collects, stores, and shares your data, please refer to our Privacy Policy.
10. No Warranty
10.1 Pivitax's AI features are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable UK law, Pivitax makes no warranty, express or implied, in relation to:
- The accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any AI-generated output;
- The fitness of any AI-generated output for a particular purpose;
- The uninterrupted or error-free availability of AI features;
- The compatibility of AI outputs with HMRC requirements or any other regulatory standard.
10.2 Nothing in this disclaimer excludes any warranty that cannot be excluded under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or other applicable UK consumer protection legislation.
11. Limitation of Liability
11.1 To the fullest extent permitted by law, Pivitax shall not be liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of or reliance on AI-generated outputs, including but not limited to: errors in your Self Assessment tax return or accounts; HMRC penalties, interest, or investigations; overpayment or underpayment of tax; loss of income, profit, or business opportunity; or any indirect, consequential, or special loss.
11.2 Where Pivitax's liability cannot be excluded by law, it is limited to the greater of: (a) the total subscription fees paid by you to Pivitax in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim; or (b) £100.
11.3 Nothing in this disclaimer limits Pivitax's liability for death or personal injury caused by its negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited under UK law.
12. Changes to This Disclaimer
Pivitax may update this AI Product Disclaimer from time to time to reflect changes in AI technology, the third-party services it uses, applicable law, or HMRC guidance. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this document and, where appropriate, notify you by email to the address associated with your Pivitax account. Your continued use of Pivitax's AI features after any such update constitutes your acceptance of the revised disclaimer.
